Summary
Lena Forsen’s 1972 Playboy centrefold image has been used as a standard test for digital image processing algorithms for decades within the tech industry.
The Losing Lena project is designed to highlight gender inequality issues within the tech industry by dissuading individuals, tech companies and learning institutions from utilising Lena’s image moving forward.
It also aims to be the first global online movement to encourage more women to pursue careers in the tech industries.
Accompanying a short documentary which forms the foundation of this important first step, a microsite was launched to further promote awareness of this project and to capture pledges from individuals and institutions to not use Lena’s image anymore.
